“We were asleep in the first half”

Markus Krösche, Dino Toppmöller and Kevin Trapp assess the defeat in Stuttgart with a critical eye.

Board member for sport Markus Krösche: “We deserved to lose by the score we did. Stuttgart were very clinical in the first half, but we’re also giving away too many simple goals. When you concede goals so early, it’s not easy – we had to regroup. Stuttgart are very good in all areas. We clearly need to impose ourselves better; we didn’t have enough of a cutting edge. These are the points we need to continue working on.”

We were asleep in the first half, which is extremely frustrating.

Head coach Dino Toppmöller

Head coach Dino Toppmöller: “Congratulations to VfB and Sebastian for a deserved win. We were asleep in the first half, which is extremely frustrating. Two things were key: too many simple losses of possession plus the lack of a certain sharpness. We invite our opponents with two actions and suddenly they’re 2-0 up. After that, VfB moved the ball around well and had us chasing. A good attack leads to the third goal and then it was game over.”

Kevin Trapp: “We weren’t ready. The goals are coming far too cheaply. We did better in the second half, but Stuttgart also moved down a gear. When you trail 2-0 so early, it’s very difficult mentally. The manner of the goals we conceded is just unnecessary. We were always a step too late and didn’t get into the duels. We had to do a lot of chasing.”
