Movember in Frankfurt: On Tuesday, Timothy Chandler and urologist Dr. Clara Humke from the Frankfurt University Hospital met at the ProfiCamp at Deutsche Bank Park. Together, they worked to raise awareness of the fact that cancer can affect young men and how to take measures to prevent it, as early detection can help avoid suffering a serious disease.

The issue of testicular and prostate cancer is a very real one currently in the Bundesliga as several players have been diagnosed with the disease already this season. That was the reason behind Frankfurt University Hospital’s visit to Eintracht, with Dr. Humke from the urology department spending time at the ProfiCamp as part of the ‘Movember’ initiative.

“Men die earlier than women and one of the reasons for that is that they don’t go for preventative check-ups as often,” said Dr. Humke when she met up with Chandler. “We can detect typical male cancers such as testicular and prostate cancer well, and treat them very successfully.”

I think it’s important that young men in particular should be aware of the risk.

The duo spoke on the Deutsche Bank Park premises and agreed that early detection is worthwhile. “I think it’s important that young men in particular should be aware of the risk,” said Chandler. “Tumours like this can be fatal but if they’re treated in time you can continue to live well – even as a professional athlete.”

Dr. Humke expressed her thanks for the opportunity to draw attention to the issue: “I think it’s wonderful that Eintracht Frankfurt and Timothy Chandler are campaigning for men’s health.”

Chandler added: “We’ve all seen that it’s an issue in football right now. When it comes to health, you suddenly realise what really matters. That’s why I think this initiative is just terrific.

Movember in Frankfurt

The urology department at the Frankfurt University Hospital has supported the annual Movember initiative since 2017. The word is an amalgam of ‘moustache’ and ‘November’, the month in which the campaign aims to raise awareness for men’s health and preventative care.
