Goals from Lacroix and Kevin Behrens either side of Max’s well-worked leveller gave the visitors a 2-1 half-time lead at Deutsche Bank Park. Ansgar Knauff went close to restoring parity midway through the second half, before Marmoush struck in added time to earn Eintracht a share of the spoils. Dino Toppmöller’s side stay in sixth place, four points clear of Werder Bremen in seventh.
Ekitiké makes full debut
Toppmöller made four changes to the team that started Thursday’s defeat to Union Saint-Gilloise in the UEFA Europa Conference League. Winter signing Hugo Ekitiké, making his full Eintracht debut, was joined in the side by Max, Donny van de Beek and Junior Dina Ebimbe. Niels Nkounkou, Mario Götze and Farès Chaibi were named on the bench, but Ellyes Skhiri was absent from the squad due to a back injury.
Wolves edge pulsating first half
The Eagles were chasing their first win in six competitive matches but fell behind in just the second minute at Deutsche Bank Park. Maximilian Arnold’s shot from the edge of the penalty area was deflected into the path of Jonas Wind, whose cross towards the far post was bundled in by Lacroix. The goal was subject to a lengthy video assistant referee review to establish whether Moritz Jenz had touched Lacroix’s header with his hand, but the officials saw no reason to overturn Daniel Schlager’s on-field decision.
Eintracht responded well, though, equalising just 12 minutes later in a move started and finished by Max. Having continued his run into the area, the full-back was picked out by Ekitiké and made no mistake with his finish, drilling low past the onrushing Koen Casteels. Ekitiké and Lovro Majer both went close as the game continued to ebb and flow, but it was Wolfsburg who took a narrow lead into the break after Behrens beat Kevin Trapp with a precise header from Joakim Maehle’s delivery.
Marmoush to the rescue
There were few clear-cut openings in a much more tentative start to the second period, which was delayed by several minutes after fans threw tennis balls and plastic toys onto the pitch. Ridle Baku shot straight at Trapp from a tight angle before Knauff dragged a shot wide from an excellent position inside the box.
Eintracht fans felt their team should have been awarded a late spot-kick when Marmoush was bundled over by Lacroix, but the Egyptian had the last laugh as he emphatically fired home Timothy Chandler’s flick-on for his tenth Bundesliga goal of the season. Chaibi and Robin Koch both went close to a late winner, but the visitors held on to claim a point.
