Eintracht Frankfurt mourn Friedel Rausch

Former Eintracht Frankfurt coach Friedel Rausch, who led the Eagles to arguably the greatest success in their history with UEFA Cup glory in 1980, died on Saturday at the age of 77.

Eintracht Frankfurt are mourning Friedel Rausch, who died on Saturday at the age of 77. The former coach, who played for hometown club Duisburg and FC Schalke 04 between 1961 and 1971, first took charge at Eintracht between January 1979 and summer 1980. It was in the UEFA Cup that the club enjoyed their greatest success during this period and arguably in the club's history, bringing home the trophy in 1980 thanks to a 1-0 victory against Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Rausch moved on to Turkish club Fenerbahçe following that triumph and also had spells at 1. FC Kaiserslautern and Gladbach. In 2001 he re-joined a struggling Eintracht but was unable to save them from relegation to the second tier. His most recent post came between 2002 and 2006 with FC Luzern of Switzerland, where he lived.

Eintracht deputy chairman Axel Hellmann gave a touching tribute to the former coach: "Friedel Rausch will always be remembered for his part in the club's greatest ever success: the UEFA Cup win in 1980. He was a child of the Bundesliga and renowned throughout the world of football. The football world loses a true sportsman today. We mourn his loss along with everyone who knew him."
