Eintracht Frankfurt 2-0 Karslruher SC

Saturday in Bundesliga 2 was a case of top versus bottom in terms of league position and the home favourites both came out with all three points. Eintracht Frankfurt moved to the top of the table for the time being after beating a resilient Karslruher, while Greuther Fürth easily dispatched of a half-hearted Hansa Rostock to capitalise on St. Pauli dropping points.

Jörn Andersen didn't have the best of times upon his return to his old stomping ground as Eintracht Frankfurt set the record straight against KSC with a 2-0 win on home soil. Theofanis Gekas scored inside the first minute before adding a second after break to move Eintracht back to the top of Bundesliga 2.

Robles gifts Frankfurt the lead

Frankfurt wasted little time in taking the lead when Gekas followed up after Luis Robles spilled a routine Alexander Meier effort to poke home after just 40 seconds. Despite the early setback Karslruher defended stoutly, though a lack of urgency in Eintracht's forward movements meant the visitors were rarely stretched at the back.

Delron Buckley forced a good save out of Thomas Kessler at one end, but Pirmin Schwegler went closest to adding to the lead for the hosts when his superb curling free-kick beat Robles all ends up only to come back off the upright. KSC imposed themselves on the game more towards the end of the first half, but short of clear cut chances, Frankfurt held onto their lead going in at the break.

Gekas grabs a second

The home side picked up where they left off as another Schwegler free-kick struck aluminium, this time via the head of Gordon Schildenfeld who should have done better at the back post. Karlsruher soon carved out their best opportunity on the counter, but in a three-on-one situation Gaeten Krebs was selfish and ultimately wasteful when he opted to take the shot on himself from a tight angle. The game picked up with Klemens Lavric and Meier exchanging shots at either end, but Frankfurt were on the front foot and eventually added to the scoreline.

Schwegler released Meier down the right to find Gekas darting in front of his marker and finishing assuredly from close range for the second time. The goal took the sting out of the game, though Meier should have made it three. However, in going for power over placement the German made it easy for Robles to save as Frankfurt settled for a two-goal winning margin.
