Eintracht eye maiden Supercup success

The first piece of silverware of the 2018/19 season is up for grabs on Sunday. Eintracht Frankfurt have never lifted the Supercup before, but the Eagles are looking to change that this weekend.

Karl-Heinz Feldkamp’s 1988 DFB Cup winners were beaten 2-0 by Werder Bremen in Eintracht’s most recent Supercup appearance over 30 years ago. This Sunday, the current Eagles side will hope to clinch their second piece of silverware in a matter of months when they face Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich in the first competitive encounter of the new season.

Double debut in the dugout

Frankfurt head coach Adi Hütter and new Bayern Munich boss Niko Kovac will both take charge of their respective new teams for the first time in a competitive fixture. Sunday’s clash is a particularly special occasion for Kovac, who faces his former employers on his first appearance in the Bayern dugout. Less than three months ago, the 46-year-old guided the Eagles to DFB Cup glory with a 3-1 victory over the Bavarians in the final.

After several weeks of intense preparation and numerous training camps, both sets of players are eagerly anticipating the start of the new campaign. “I can’t wait for the season to get under way,” said Eagles midfielder Marco Fabián. “I’m glad to be back. We’re capable of beating Bayern again.”

Bayern captain Manuel Neuer, meanwhile, is hoping to gain revenge on Eintracht for the DFB Cup final defeat back in May. “It’s no ordinary game for us,” said the 32-year-old. “The Supercup is an important title and that’s how we’ll approach the game.”

Viewers in Germany can watch the 2018 Supercup on Eurosport 2 and on ZDF. Sunday’s encounter will also be broadcast in over 200 FIFA member nations across the globe, with FOX Sports (South America and the Netherlands), Sky Perfect TV (Japan), Eleven Sports (Poland), StarTimes (sub-Saharan Africa) and Deutsche Welle all covering the game.
