A few weeks after winning the 1974 World Cup with Germany on home soil, Bernd Hölzenbein celebrated his first ever DFB Cup win with Eintracht. “Holz”, as he was always known, would go on to win two more. The mercurial striker made 420 Bundesliga appearances for the club between 1966 and 1981 before heading to the USA. He scored 160 league goals in that time – a club record.
After struggling in his early days, Hölzenbein went on to establish himself as a veritable club legend. One of his proudest days was doubtless the UEFA Cup win in 1979, when the Eagles beat Borussia Mönchengladbach in the final – “Holz” was Eintracht captain that night and got to hoist the trophy aloft.
After hanging up his boots in 1986 in Salmrohr, he returned to Eintracht as vice-president in 1988 before going on to become general manager.
Hölzenbein’s time in that role came to an end when the club was relegated from the top flight for the first time in its history in 1996, but he was to return in 2004 as head of scouting, whilst acting as a consultant for the board. He is currently a brand ambassador for the club.
Eintracht would like to wish Bernd Hölzenbein all the very best and of course a very happy birthday!
