Defeat in Cologne

It was 16 years ago that Eintracht beat 1. FC Koeln away from home. And the wait continues after Saturday’s 1-0 defeat in a heated game at the ‘Rhein-Energie-Stadion’ in front of 49,000 in Cologne. The only goal came from a 56th minute long range shot of Clemens.

Michael Skibbe changed the Eintracht line up that had been successful with the win against Mainz 05 last week in one position: Ralf Faehrmann replaced the injured Oka Nikolov in goal. It was the third appearance this season for the highly rated 22 year old talent. In defense Russ was able to play despite knee problems alongside Vasoski, Franz and Chris are still out injured. Schwegler and Koehler returned to the central midfield.

Eintracht controlled the game in the first half against a Cologne side showing the pressure they’re under, the Eagles had more possession throughout (up to 80%) and looked far more capable than the hosts. Amanatidis and Gekas had scoring opportunities in the first 25 minutes while Cologne’s striking power was further eliminated when Podolski had to be subbed off with an injury (22’). Frankfurt was dangerous with neat combinations and also from set piece situations, mostly actioned by Tzavellas. Amanatidis had another chance to put the ball into the net after 35 minutes when he showed a skilful dribble but sidenetted the ball.

Cologne on the other hand hardly had chances, the best one probably in the 43rd minute when Faehrmann denied Matuschyk’s header with a fine save. The hosts mainly reacted with fouls and seemed to have no answer to Eintracht’s convincing game. Still it was 0-0 at half time.

The match turned after the break when Cologne came back with more attitude and belief, Frankfurt surprisingly more and more gave away the control. The goal in minute 56 after a fast break still seemed slightly out of the blue, but Eintracht from then on looked discouraged. FC now took on the challenge and while slowing down the game at every opportunity they also managed to create various attacks towards the Eagle’s goal resulting in further opportunities to score the second. A Lanig chip just went over the cross bar and Faehrmann showed his talent by saving three shots in the last ten minutes. The biggest chance for the equaliser fell to Amanatidis, his shot was just cleared by Mohamad (63’). Eintracht did not get back into the game which had two totally contrary halves.

It seemed to be an unnecessary defeat against a Cologne side being deep in the relegation zone of the Bundesliga standings. Eintracht’s defense which is already struggling from injuries will be further weakened after Russ was booked the 5th time this season, he will be banned in next week’s game against the current Bundesliga top team Borussia Dortmund (Saturday, 15.30h CET).
