Borré has last laugh in dramatic finish

Eintracht Frankfurt conceded a late equaliser at Greuther Fürth but Rafael Borré struck deep into injury time to secure a 2-1 win. Sebastian Rode had given the Eagles the lead.

Rode opened the scoring 15 minutes from time, but Cedric Itten appeared to have earned the hosts a point when he struck two minutes into second-half injury time. There was still time for a late twist, however, as Borré slotted home two minutes later to earn Oliver Glasner’s side their second league win of the season.

Glasner shuffles his pack

Head coach Glasner made four changes to the Eintracht side that clinched their place in the Europa League knockout stage with victory at Olympiacos. There were recalls for Filip Kostic, Martin Hinteregger, Erik Durm and Jesper Lindström, with Makoto Hasebe, Timothy Chandler and Sam Lammers dropping to the bench. Aymen Barkok was left out of the matchday squad.

Tentative opening

There was precious little goalmouth action in the early stages as Fürth struggled to find a way through a well organised Eagles defence. Former Eintracht striker Branimir Hrgota nearly got on the end of Julian Green’s ball towards the far post after 16 minutes, but the Swede failed to get a touch on the American’s delivery.

Glasner’s charges lacked incision at the other end of the pitch. The majority of their attacks came down the left flank, but Fürth defender Jamie Leweling had the measure of Kostic in the first half. The hosts continued to threaten and went close to a breakthrough in the 44th minute, Hrgota firing into the side-netting from Ex-Eintracht man Jetro Willems’ cross.

Borré breaks Fürth hearts

Leweling should have broken the deadlock three minutes into the second half. Eintracht failed to clear a long ball into the penalty area and Fürth almost took full advantage, with Leweling firing over the crossbar after Willems’ shot was blocked. Almamy Toure sent a powerful effort just over Funk’s crossbar as Eintracht started to improve, before Rode collected Daichi Kamada’s pass and calmly found the bottom corner to break the deadlock.

Kevin Trapp produced an outstanding save to deny Timothy Tillman late on, but the Eintracht goalkeeper was powerless to prevent Itten bundling the ball over the line after Stefan Ilsanker had flicked Tillman’s corner into the forward’s path. Then, in the last attack of the game, Borré raced onto Kostic’s deep cross towards the far post and side-footed into the net to spark wild celebrations in the visiting dugout.

Summary: Vital victory

Eintracht weren’t at their best but got their just rewards after an improved second-half performance. Kostic and Toure both went close to breaking the deadlock before Rode’s opener, and the visitors deserve enormous credit for their reaction to Itten’s equaliser.
