“We’re preparing for a tough game”

Ahead of Sunday’s meeting with Leverkusen, Oliver Glasner discusses Bayer’s strengths and what he expects from his players this weekend.

Oliver Glasner on…

...personnel: “On the personnel front it’s looking good, there are no major complaints. The lads are just a bit tired, but we’ll do our regeneration here in Istanbul, then fly home and prepare for Leverkusen. We need to wait and see whether Jesper will be fit for Sunday.”

…upcoming opponents Leverkusen: “We’re preparing for a tough game against Leverkusen, who are in very good form. They showed their quality, particularly in attack, in the wins over Leipzig and Fürth. With the positive energy we’ve gained [from reaching the Europa League last 16], we’ll give Leverkusen a proper fight in our home stadium.”

…the opponents’ biggest strengths: “It’ll be important on Sunday to keep on top of Bayer’s counter-attacking players when they get the ball. That will be a big challenge which requires full concentration. We have to be good as a unit against Leverkusen. We need to support each other, double up. We need to be industrious and disciplined because Bayer have a lot of quality, particularly in attack.”

…defensive options: “Martin Hinteregger is a good option in central defence, as is Stefan Ilsanker. We’ve got a lot of alternatives. I haven’t decided yet who I’m going to play in the middle. Another option is to switch to a back four to deal better with the quick players they have out wide.”

...the upcoming games: “We face three matches in six days. It’s going to be intense but we’re in very good physical condition. The mind also plays a big role, which is why it was very important that we secured first place.”
