The French U19s had to work hard for the victory against Ukraine, who kept Les Bleuets at bay for long periods with a hard-working, spirited performance and a direct approach – but a narrow 1-0 victory was enough to book their place in the final of the European U19 Championship in Northern Ireland.
Jean-Mattéo Bahoya, who has made eight Bundesliga outings since joining the Eagles in January, was named on the bench before being brought on for his eighth U19 appearance ten minutes from time. The Montfermeil native witnessed a hard-fought encounter in Belfast, with Valentin Atangana Edoa’s 61st-minute strike tipping the scales in France’s favour.
Final against Spain on Sunday
Bahoya and his team-mates can now look forward to a rematch with Spain, who beat Italy after extra time in the other semi-final, in the decider at Windsor Park on Sunday 28 July (20:00 CEST). The teams played out a 2-2 draw in Group B back on 22 July.
