Europa League heroes honoured

UEFA has named Kevin Trapp as Player of the Match in the Europa League final, Filip Kostic as the competition’s Player of the Season and Ansgar Knauff as Young Player of the Season.

UEFA’s Technical Observer panel has also named Kostic, Martin Hinteregger and Rafael Santos Borré in the 2021/22 Team of the Season alongside Trapp, whose tally of 36 saves was second only to Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor.

The panel voted Borre’s stunning strike in Barcelona – which gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead – as the sixth-best of all 367 goals scored in the competition this term. Supporters are also being asked to cast their vote.

Knauff not only played every minute of Eintracht’s Europa League campaign after joining the club on loan in January, he also averaged 13.75 kilometres per game and set the Eagles on their way to Seville with the opening goals in Eintracht’s ties against Barcelona and West Ham – reason enough for UEFA’s expert panel to name the right winger as the tournament’s best young player in 2021/22.

The Europa League’s Best Player award went to Knauff’s team-mate on the opposite flank. As well as registering two goals and an assist in Eintracht’s 3-2 victory at Camp Nou, Kostic also set up more goals – six – than any other player of the 40 clubs who featured in the competition this season.
