Fernandes announces retirement

After 17 years and 10 different clubs, Gelson Fernandes will bring his eventful playing career to an end this summer.

Gelson Fernandes moved to Eintracht from Stade Rennais in 2017. After extending his contract by another year in 2018, he’ll end his career at the end of this season.

Gelson Fernandes: running machine, globetrotter, leader and respectfully dubbed a “player-coach” by Adi Hütter. A player who brings his teammates together on and off the pitch, backs up those in front of him and regularly leaves opponents frustrated. In short: one of those whose value may only become apparent once he’s gone. In the summer, he will be – for good.

“I always wanted to decide the timing and the circumstances myself and not stop because there was no other option,” said the cheerful Fernandes, explaining the step which did not seem obvious until recently. “I thought about it for a long time and I have to be honest with myself, my teammates and the club. I’ve always been honest with football.” What’s more, continuing at another club never entered the equation. “I’m happy that I’m able to do this here. It’s the right point in time. Eintracht have given me a lot.” And vice versa.

Fit for the rest of the season

In 79 competitive appearances since 2017, the defensive midfielder has put his body on the line for the Eagles. Out of his 10 clubs, he only had more touches of the ball for his hometown club FC Sion and Stade Rennais. The 33-year-old has made 20 appearances during the current campaign.

Overall, the 2018 DFB Cup winner has played 518 club matches and 67 internationals across a 17-year career, including two World Cups and two European Championships.
