Sow eliminated

Switzerland were knocked out in the World Cup round of 16 after a 6-1 defeat to Portugal, leaving Jakic and Kolo Muani to fly the Eintracht flag in the quarter-finals.

For the third time in a row after 2014 and 2018, Switzerland’s World Cup journey ended at the last-16 stage as they were beaten 6-1 by Portugal. The star of the show was 21-year-old Goncalo Ramos, who hit a hat-trick (17’, 51’, 67’) as well as providing an assist. Djibril Sow came off in the 54th minute of the match. Ex-Dortmund man Manuel Akanji headed in for the Swiss to make it 4-1 (58’), while the other Portuguese goals came from Pepe (33’), Raphaël Guerreiro (55’) and Rafael Leao (90’+2).

Sow started in every game at the World Cup, taking his international appearances to 36 – 30 of them since the start of 2020.

Sow’s exit leaves two Eintracht players left in the tournament. Kristijan Jakic and Croatia contest the first of the quarter-finals against Brazil on Friday, followed by Randal Kolo Muani and France, who meet EURO 2020 runners-up England on Saturday night.
