Barkok beaten in extra time

Eintracht’s Aymen Barkok played nearly 105 minutes as Morocco lost 2-1 to Egypt in the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals.

Aymen Barkok’s Morocco missed out on their first Africa Cup of Nations semi-final since 2004 after the Atlas Lions lost an emotionally charged encounter 2-1 to Egypt after extra time.

Eintracht midfielder Barkok started for the first time at the tournament and was celebrating after just seven minutes, when Sofiane Boufal converted a penalty awarded by the video assistant referee to give Morocco the lead from their first meaningful attack of the game.

Morocco held firm after Mohamed Salah restored parity for Egypt eight minutes into the second half, but half-time substitute Trezeguet finished off a counter-attack to make it 2-1 with 100 minutes gone. Barkok was replaced by winger Zakaria Aboukhlal four minutes later.
