Attention turns to Düsseldorf

The new year couldn’t have started any better for Eintracht, and there was more good news on Tuesday as Marco Russ returned to the training pitch.

“We have to keep working hard, and then the successes will follow,” said board member Fredi Bobic on Saturday after the 2-0 win against Leipzig. On Tuesday, the Eagles began preparations for a test of character at basement boys Fortuna Düsseldorf.

The trip to North Rhine-Westphalia marks the start of a mammoth month with seven games in the space of 27 days, which makes it even more important that head coach Adi Hütter has close to a full squad at his disposal. Aside from defensive midfield duo Gelson Fernandes and Lucas Torró, who are out long-term, only Bas Dost was absent because of a stomach bug. Russ completed a jogging session next to his teammates for the first time since tearing his Achilles in mid-August.

Defensive improvement

“We’ve worked heavily on our defending in recent weeks,” confirmed Goncalo Paciencia, who as a centre-forward is also the first line of defence. Before Saturday’s win over the deadliest attack in the Bundesliga, Eintracht had gone 10 games without a clean sheet going back to mid-October.
