Another Win: 3-1 at Home

Eintracht Frankfurt managed the 5th win in 6 league games now with today's home win against Wolfsburg. Top striker Gekas scored twice again, banking 11 goals in 11 league games now. Schwegler hit a wonder goal to make it 2-0 before halftime, Dejagah made it 3-1 (66') after Gekas had converted a penalty (55').

With no change in the starting line up Eintracht showed right from the start great confidence and willpower to gain a good result. Wolfsburg looked capable throughout and had various opportunities to score but did so only once.

By then they were already three goals down, two of which came from efforts of ‘The Phenomenon’: Eintracht’s and Bundesliga’s top striker Theofanis Gekas. He scored three braces in a row now, with two goals each against HSV in the cup and in the league games at St. Pauli and today. 11 goals in 11 Bundesliga games - an outstanding ratio.

The Greek got Eintracht ahead 26 minutes into the game scoring with a neat finish from outside the box, it being his first goal from that area. It was a tight and tense match but Eintracht always had the right answer when Wolfsburg’s pressure seemed to increase. Precisely so when midfielder Pirmin Schwegler had a go from far range and hit the target with a ‘goal of the month’ contender.

Wolfsburg seemed impressed but worked hard and had comeback chances throughout. Eagle keeper Nikolov had some top class saves during the match. When Kjaer wrestled down Maik Franz in the box the referee gave a penalty. Gekas stepped up to get his second (55’).

Eintracht have now won 5 of the last 6 league games, ahead of three Sunday games the club is ranked third in Bundesliga. The way the team performs and the way the results keep rolling in shows that something is coming together at the club. It is over 17 years ago that Eintracht had a better start to a Bundesliga season.

Coming up next is the game away to Werder Bremen in a week’s time (Sat, 15.30 CET). We look forward to finding out if ‘The Phenomenon’ will be up to something again.
