AFCON last 16: Marmoush exits tournament

The Eintracht striker kept his cool in the penalty shoot-out against DR Congo but his Egypt side were beaten 8-7 on spot-kicks following a 1-1 draw after extra time.

Omar Marmoush entered the fray in the 83rd minute of Egypt’s clash with DR Congo in the Africa Cup of Nations last 16. The Eintracht frontman held his nerve from the spot after the teams had played out a 1-1 draw, but The Pharaohs – finalists in the last edition – exited the tournament after losing 8-7 in the shoot-out.

Eintracht’s current top goalscorer will therefore return to Frankfurt earlier than anticipated. Algeria’s Farès Chaibi and Tunisia’s Ellyes Skhiri arrived back at the club last week after exiting the competition in the group stage, with both players coming off the bench in the second half of the Eagles’ 1-0 win against Mainz.
