Versatile Egyptian

Idols and big footsteps, famous teammates and mentors as well as his secure place in SGE history: four things on Eintracht’s new signing Omar Marmoush.

In Omar Marmoush, a real attacking all-rounder is coming to Frankfurt ahead of the new season. The former Wolfsburg man can operate up front or on either flank, and is therefore a constant menace to opposing defences. His strengths include his speed and his robustness.

“We’ve signed a player in Omar Marmoush who will lend even more flexibility to our attack with the qualities he has,” said board member for sport Markus Krösche on the new arrival. Marmoush is making the next step in German football at Frankfurt, his fourth club. He had loan spells at FC St. Pauli and VfB Stuttgart during his time at Wolfsburg, making 21 appearances for each team.

I needn’t say much about the fans. I think they’re among the best in Germany.

The Egyptian is excited about the move, and about the Eintracht fans: “I needn’t say much about the fans. I think they’re among the best in Germany. That convinced me to take my next step with the club,” explained the 24-year-old.

Frankfurt’s first Egyptian

Marmoush will become the first Egyptian to play for Eintracht. He also possesses a Canadian passport as his parents worked there for six years. He’s made 17 appearances for Egypt to date, with his greatest success coming last year when he was a key figure in the team’s run to the final of the Africa Cup of Nations, where they lost to Senegal on penalties.

Debut with Malouda, discovered by Littbarski

In July 2016, he made his senior debut for Wadi Degla in Egypt on the final day of the season at the age of 17. He came on in the 77th minute and immediately got to play alongside a big name in international football – former France star Florent Malouda was playing his last game for the Cairo club and had already laid on two goals at this point. Marmoush followed suit just two minutes after coming on and set up the winner in a 3-2 victory over Al Ittihad.

His talent was thus evident early on. One year later, the 18-year-old youngster caught the eye of Pierre Littbarski, 1990 World Cup winner with Germany. In his role as Wolfsburg’s chief scout, he discovered Marmoush at the Africa U-20 Cup of Nations in Zambia and brought him to Germany.

Big idol and big footsteps

After that, the only way was up for the forward. He’s picked up many of the facets of his game from Egypt’s superstar Mohamed Salah, who he names as his biggest idol. “When I watch him, I can learn a lot,” says Marmoush of his countryman.

Marmoush will pull on the number seven shirt for Eintracht, a number previously worn by club legends such as Jürgen Grabowski, Bernd Hölzenbein, Jay-Jay Okocha, Rudi Bommer and Uwe Bindewald – and many more.
