Matchday in focus: Greeks looking to end German drought

Olympiacos have been in good form on their travels of late, but experience shows the Greeks find it tough on German soil.

Tactics

Olympiacos head coach Pedro Martins usually sets his team up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, although he’s used a different system in both of their group matches in this year’s UEFA Europa League. In the 2-1 victory over Royal Antwerp, his charges lined up in a classic 4-4-2, while in the 3-0 win against Fenerbahce, the Portuguese opted for 4-1-4-1. Regardless of the tactical changes, his team won both encounters and currently lead Group D with six points.

Absentees

Eintracht boss Oliver Glasner is expected to be without the injured Aymen Barkok and Christopher Lenz.

Youssef El-Arabi.

One to watch: Youssef El-Arabi

Youssef El-Arabi knows where the goal is. The experienced striker has found the net 59 times in 111 appearances for Olympiacos – and he appears to particularly enjoy the European stage. El-Arabi, who has won 45 caps for the Moroccan national team, has been a regular scorer in both the Champions League and Europa League, particularly in the latter. In 12 matches in the competition, the 34-year-old has netted seven goals, including the coastal club’s first in this year’s group stage on Matchday 1 against Antwerp.

Statistics

Olympiacos have travelled to Germany eight times before. On seven of those occasions they were beaten without scoring, while the Greeks’ last seven matches against German teams have all ended in defeat.
