Matchday in focus: Tactical unknown

After the 3-1 win in the reverse fixture against Olympiacos FC, Eintracht know what kind of team they’re coming up against – but not what system.

Tactics

In the Greek Super League, Olympiacos coach Pedro Martins prefers a 4-2-3-1 system, but his side have lined up in a different formation in each of their UEFA Europa League group games so far this season. In the 2-1 win over Royal Antwerp FC, they played in a classic 4-4-2, and then in a 4-1-4-1 in the 3-0 victory against Fenerbahce SK. Against Eintracht two weeks ago, Martins adopted a 4-3-3- system.

Absentees

Eintracht are set to be without injured pair Christopher Lenz and Goncalo Paciencia for the trip to Piraeus, while midfielders Sebastian Rode and Kristijan Jakic are doubtful. For Olympiacos, Andreas Bouchalakis, Svetozar Markovic and Pape Abou Cissé are ruled out.

One to watch: Yann M’Vila

Olympiacos FC midfielder Yann M'Vila and Rafael Borré.

Yann M'Vila brought a wealth of international experience with him when he joined Olympiacos in September 2020. The Frenchman has made a total of eight starts in all competitions this season – including each of the last three games – and has always occupied the defensive midfield role in front of the defence, irrespective of the formation. The 31-year-old has registered one goal and one assist this term.

Statistics

Eintracht Frankfurt have won eight of their 10 away matches in the Europa League group stage.

Filip Kostic has produced 31 crosses already in this Europa League campaign, the most in the competition by some distance.

Olympiacos’ last win over a Bundesliga team was in the 2011/12 season, when the Greek record champions beat Borussia Dortmund 3-1 at home.

Head-to-head

Eintracht and Olympiacos met for the first time in European competition in the reverse fixture, which the Eagles won 3-1.
