Matchday in focus: Werder Bremen

We train the spotlight on Saturday’s opponents, who have been impressive away from home this season and are dangerous on the break.

Tactics

Werder Bremen have already won four games so far in 2024/25, which is as many as they managed in the entire first half of the season last year, as well as recording three draws and three defeats. That has left them with 15 points in eighth place in the standings. Werder have been particularly good away from home and their haul of ten points on their travels is beaten only by Bayern Munich.

They tend to play in a 3-4-2-1 or 3-4-3 formation, with goalkeeper Michael Zetterer, captain Marco Friedl, central midfielder Senne Lynen and forward Marvin Ducksch forming the spine of the team.

“We’re facing a team who want to play football, have very good patterns of play in attack, know exactly what they want to do with the ball, and with a goalkeeper who is good with his feet,” said Dino Toppmöller.

Absentees

Eintracht will be without Oscar Højlund, Rasmus Kristensen and Aurèle Amenda on Saturday.

For Bremen, Felix Agu (knee) and Jens Stage (neck) will miss out.

One to watch: Senne Lynen

Lynen is a pillar of Bremen’s team in central midfield. The 25-year-old, who joined the club in August 2023, has only missed one game this season, and that was due to a concussion. Lynen…

  • … has made 11 appearances in 2024/25, nine in the Bundesliga and two in the DFB Cup.
  • … has been in the starting line-up of every game he has featured in.
  • … has completed 84.3 percent of his passes.
  • … has contested more duels and intercepted more balls than any other player at Bremen.

Facts and figures

Eintracht have beaten Bremen more times than they have any other Bundesliga team (38). Indeed, the Eagles have lost only one of the last nine league meetings with Werder.

If Mario Götze plays, it will be his 100th competitive appearance for Eintracht. Farès Chaibi and Niels Nkounkou could each make their 50th outings for the club.
