Matchday in focus: FC Bayern Munich

The top-of-the-table clash between Bayern and Eintracht pits two of the league’s best frontlines and counter-attacking sides against each other.

Tactics

Having fielded a 4-4-2 system with two deep-lying midfielders against Eintracht on the opening day of the campaign, Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann has been operating with a 4-2-3-1 for several months.

Absentees

Bayern will be without Lucas Hernández, Manuel Neuer, Noussair Mazraoui, Sadio Mané and Bouna Sarr this weekend.

As for Eintracht, Éric Junior Dina Ebimbe and Marcel Wenig are sidelined through injury. Paxten Aaronson is on international duty with the USA and Luca Pellegrini (calf) is a doubt.

One to watch: Yann Sommer

The record German champions were forced to enter the transfer market following a long-term injury to Manuel Neuer, securing the services of one of the Bundesliga’s most experienced goalkeepers. Yann Sommer has not been with his new employers for long but produced eye-catching performances in his first two appearances for the club.

Gnabry closing in on Musiala

Serge Gnabry has impressed at the other end of the pitch, with Jamal Musiala the only Bayern player to register more Bundesliga goals and assists combined (15) than the 27-year-old (12) this season. In his last eight league appearances alone, Gnabry has scored six goals and set up a further three.

Stats and runs

After being held by Leipzig and Köln, Bayern have failed to win either of their first two games in a calendar year for the first time since 2015. The last time they started a year with a three-match winless run was in 2007.

Head-to-head record

Saturday’s game is the 104th Bundesliga meeting between the teams. The Eagles have won 24 of those, while Bayern have emerged victorious on 57 occasions. Twenty-two encounters have ended all square.

Eintracht have a decent recent record against Bayern in the Bundesliga, winning three and losing four of the teams’ last seven matches.
