Tactics
Six years as sporting director and coach at Lippstadt, a season and a half as Borussia Dortmund U23 coach and then the move to Norwich in the east of England, where Daniel Farke eventually made a name for himself as a first-team head coach.
In the summer, he got his first post in the Bundesliga with Borussia Mönchengladbach. In all 12 competitive matches to date, the 45-year-old has used a 4-2-3-1 formation with top scorer Marcus Thuram as the lone striker.
Absentees
Hannes Wolf, Jonas Hofmann, Yann Sommer, Florian Neuhaus, Ko Itakura and Mamadou Doucouré are all out injured for Gladbach.
Aurélio Buta, Ansgar Knauff and Makoto Hasebe are on the injury list for Eintracht.
One to watch: Marcus Thuram
Three Borussia Mönchengladbach players have scored seven or more goals in the first 10 matchdays of a Bundesliga season during this millennium – Thuram, who joined the Lower Rhine club in summer 2019, is one of them. The other two players to have achieved this for the Foals since 2000 are Thorgan Hazard (2018/19, seven) and Oliver Neuville (2004/05, eight).
- • Seven of Borussia’s 18 league goals this season have come from Thuram. Only Werder Bremen’s Niclas Füllkrug has scored more times (eight).
- He’s also second in the league behind Füllkrug (10) when it comes to goal involvements with nine, together with Union Berlin’s Sheraldo Becker and Jamal Musiala of Bayern Munich.
- The forward has fired off the most shots on goal in the Bundesliga in the current campaign (40).
Key battle: Mario Götze vs. Julian Weigl
Mario Götze has played 1,178 minutes for the Eagles since his arrival from PSV in the summer, and he’s set to make his 242nd Bundesliga appearance on Matchday 11. If he gets on the scoresheet, it would be his 60th goal in Germany’s top flight. He’s likely to come up against an old colleague in midfield at Gladbach.
Julian Weigl has made 122 Bundesliga appearances to date – 116 of them were for the other Borussia from Dortmund before he joined the Foals on loan at the start of this season. The six-time Germany international has also earned his stripes in Europe: 63 appearances in European competitions, as well as 77 games in the Portuguese Primeira Liga for SL Benfica between January 2020 and August 2022. Since his return to Germany, the 27-year-old has mostly lined up alongside Kouadio Koné in defensive midfield – the young Frenchman has won the second most challenges in the league this season.
