Eintracht

Adiós, capitano!

Ahead of his final match, David Abraham talks about his reasons for leaving, his retirement plans and the club that’s given him so much – Eintracht Frankfurt.

David, what made you decide to end your career?
“The process started some time ago. During the 2018/19 season, when we reached the semi-finals of the Europa League, I thought I would speak to Adi Hütter to suggest that the following season be my last. Because of coronavirus, I decided to stick around for another six months to help Eintracht Frankfurt, the club that has given me so much.”

It can’t have been an easy decision for you.
“No, certainly not, but it’s worth it for my son Alfonso! When I came to Frankfurt nearly six years ago, I never thought we’d go on such a long journey together. There have been a lot of wonderful moments along the way, as well as a few sad ones. That’s what makes saying goodbye so hard.”

What’s the plan for after your career?
“I want to go back home now and play in the amateur league for the club where it all started and where I discovered my love for football, namely Huracán de Chabás. It’s the equivalent of the ninth or tenth tier in Germany.”

Being part of a team with fans like that behind them makes me proud.

What are you particularly proud of during your time as an Eagle?
“Winning the cup in Berlin – that moment will never leave me. As well as that, the displays from our fans in our Europa League home games the following season filled me with great pride. Being part of a team with fans like that behind them makes me proud.”

How will you remember Eintracht?
“I only have the best feelings towards Eintracht Frankfurt. When I stood on the pitch and saw and heard the fans, it was just amazing. Since I’ve been in Frankfurt, it’s always been like a family. Eintracht Frankfurt is a very special club, especially because of its fans. When the stadium is full again, I’ll come back and say goodbye properly. I just owe it to the fans.”
