Eagles hold Dortmund

Daichi Kamada’s early goal was cancelled out by Gio Reyna as Eintracht produced a dogged performance to earn a point against Borussia Dortmund.

Kamada’s fourth Bundesliga goal gave the Eagles a deserved early lead, but Reyna fired Dortmund level in the second half with a powerful strike into the top corner. The visitors piled on the pressure late on but Eintracht defended stoutly to stretch their unbeaten Bundesliga run to five matches.

Rode returns to starting XI

Adi Hütter made two changes to the Eintracht team that drew 3-3 with Union Berlin last time out. Sebastian Rode was handed his first start since October in place of Stefan Ilsanker, while Aymen Barkok was brought in for Bas Dost. The Morocco international joined Kamada in attacking midfield, with André Silva operating as the lone striker.

Eagles off to flyer

The teams traded early chances in a pulsating opening to the Matchday 10 clash, but neither Mats Hummels nor Filip Kostic were able to hit the target. Rode picked out Erik Durm with a superb through-ball not long afterwards, only for the 28-year-old to be denied by a last-ditch tackle from Nico Schulz.

Eintracht soon got the goal their early dominance merited, Kamada steering the ball past Roman Bürki after latching onto Martin Hinteregger’s exquisite pass. Kostic then dragged a shot narrowly wide as the Eagles continued to enjoy the better opportunities, before Barkok blazed over the bar following a slick Eintracht move on the edge of the box. Jadon Sancho twice went close for Dortmund but was unable to test SGE goalkeeper Kevin Trapp.

Stunning equaliser denies Eintracht

Borussia emerged for the second half with greater purpose and their pressure soon paid off, Reyna slamming an unstoppable shot past Trapp to restore parity 11 minutes after the restart. Half-time substitute Youssoufa Moukoko stung Trapp’s palms from the edge of the box as Dortmund continued to pin the Eagles back, before Sancho curled a free-kick narrowly over the bar from the edge of the area.

Chances were few and far between in a disjointed end to the game, although second-half substitute Dost might have won it for Eintracht on the counter-attack had he managed to get a decisive touch on Kamada’s inswinging delivery.

Summary: Room for optimism

Reyna’s equaliser may have denied Eintracht a first league win since Matchday 3, but there were plenty of positives to take into next Friday’s trip to VfL Wolfsburg. The Eagles defended diligently throughout and could have claimed all three points had they taken one of their better first-half opportunities.
