Friendly opponents at a glance
Based in Aston, a suburb of Birmingham, Unai Emery’s side finished sixth in the 2024/25 Premier League season. The Spanish coach has been in charge of the team since 2022. Villa’s trophy cabinet houses seven league titles and the European Cup (1981/82).
This meeting of Bundesliga and Premier League opposition on American soil is a special highlight of the team’s pre-season preparations and underlines how Eintracht Frankfurt’s internationalisation efforts are bearing fruit.
Eintracht also faced LouCity FC in a friendly last summer, running out 4-0 winners. “Our players were incredibly proud to be on the pitch against such a top European club,” said head coach Danny Cruz, despite the defeat. “We’re very thankful for the opportunity to experience this again.”
“It’s an honour that Eintracht Frankfurt are returning to Louisville this summer,” added club president James O’Connor. “We take great pride in our facilities and our hospitality.”
Competing in the USL Championship, the second tier of the U.S. league system, LouCity are in the middle of their season and sitting near the top of the Eastern Conference after 16 games.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the city partnership between Frankfurt and Philadelphia. To mark the occasion, Philadelphia Union and Eintracht will meet for a friendly on 2 August, having last met in summer 2018.
“We’re delighted to welcome Eintracht Frankfurt back to Philadelphia and Subaru Park,” said Ernst Tanner, Sporting Director of Philadelphia Union. “Both teams play with a dynamic, aggressive style and embody a relentless, hard-working underdog mentality.”
Head coach Bradley Carnell previously played for Stuttgart, Karlsruhe, Gladbach and Rostock, and his team are currently third of the MLS Eastern Conference. “This match will be a real test at the end of our training camp, and we’re looking forward to it,” said Eintracht’s sporting director Timmo Hardung.
Preparation in the USA
Training in Louisville will take place at the Lynn Family Sports Vision & Training Center, home to the men’s and women’s professional football teams Louisville City FC and Racing Louisville FC. “Exceptional conditions,” said Hardung of the centrally located, state-of-the-art facility. In Philadelphia, the Eagles will train at Subaru Park.
The conditions at the Lynn Family Sports Vision & Training Center are ideal for taking the next steps in our summer preparations and preparing ourselves as best we can for the challenges of the upcoming 2025/26 season.

The U.S. market, in addition to offering fantastic infrastructure, is interesting in many ways and provides us with an exciting platform to drive our development as a club

. “We’re really looking forward to returning to the United States this summer and presenting ourselves to Eintracht and football fans there. Most importantly, it’s vital in the summer that we prepare as well as possible for the new season. Last year, we laid the foundation for a strong first half of the season in Louisville. We were very pleased with the conditions there and that’s why we’ve chosen to go there again. The training camp also aligns with Eintracht Frankfurt’s internationalisation strategy. The motto ‘Building Bridges’ is more relevant than ever.”
Traces in the States

The watchword ‘Building Bridges’ is more relevant than ever nowadays, and creating bonds with people in the USA has been a matter close to our hearts at Eintracht Frankfurt for several decades.
The club’s link with the United States dates back to the 1950s and has since grown into a close relationship. Football brings people together: it fosters closeness, opens doors and overcomes boundaries. By returning to the US, Eintracht Frankfurt are making a clear statement in favour of internationality, of a closer connection to fans, and of the idea of football as a unifying force that knows no borders.
Eintracht have always been received with wonderful hospitality in the USA, most recently during last year’s training camp. Both the team and the club as a whole have always felt very welcome.
Furthermore, both Louisville and Philadelphia offer Eintracht perfect training conditions. Trips such as this Frankfurt U.S. Tour 2025 provide the club with an opportunity to increase the visibility of the Eintracht Frankfurt brand in the highly appealing U.S. market and to gain deeper insights into it.
Eintracht will be working closely with the DFL Deutsche Fußball Liga on this tour, as part of the league’s international marketing strategy to increase the visibility of the Bundesliga and its clubs in the USA and Latin America.
The Lynn Family Sports Vision & Training Center features state-of-the-art infrastructure and provides perfect conditions for the best possible preparation ahead of the new season. In Philadelphia, Eintracht will train at Subaru Park, home of Philadelphia Union.
Eintracht will share further information on this matter in due course. Keep an eye on the club’s social media channels to stay up to date.
The Eagles have travelled coast-to-coast and made an impression in numerous parts of the country since their maiden trip over 70 years ago. That ‘Goodwill Tour’ laid the foundation for future visits, as across 25 days Eintracht entertained over 70,000 spectators across eight friendlies, raising 50,000 dollars in donations along the way. This money went towards rebuilding the Riederwald stadium, a major milestone in Eintracht’s history and without which the club would not be where it is today.
Accompanied by the hashtag #SGEagles, Frankfurt held four training camps in the USA between 2017 and 2020. These trips not only provided benefits in footballing terms, but they also enhanced relations with the country and its people.
In 2024, Eintracht returned to the United States once again. You can find a detailed look at the history here on eintracht.de and in the mainaqila app.
Average temperatures in Louisville range from 21 to 32 degrees Celsius in July; in Philadelphia, it’s 22 to 32 degrees Celsius.
Yes, EintrachtTV+ will stream all three friendlies live.
Louisville is considered the gateway to the American South. The birthplace of boxing legend Muhammad Ali, it is the largest city in the state of Kentucky. Also known as ‘Bourbon City’, here you can enjoy the ‘Footsteps of Greatness’ tour to trace Ali’s story, visit Central Park, travel back in time on a steamboat ride on the Belle of Louisville, sample the local cuisine and drinks scene along the Urban Bourbon Trail, or visit the Louisville Slugger Factory and Museum – a must for sports and baseball fans. Old Louisville is also notable as the largest Victorian neighbourhood in the USA. You can find lots of information about your visit to the city on the Ohio River on the Louisville Tourism website.
The largest city in the state of Pennsylvania, and Frankfurt’s twin city for the past 10 years, is steeped in history and has plenty to see and do. The Declaration of Independence was signed at Independence Hall in 1776, as was the U.S. Constitution in 1787. A selfie in front of the neighbouring Liberty Bell is also a must.
Sport is woven into the fabric of the city, which is home to the reigning Super Bowl champions, and fans of boxing and film will enjoy the 72 steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art made famous by Sylvester Stallone in the movie ‘Rocky’, as well as the Rocky Statue at the bottom of the steps. A culinary highlight is, of course, the Philly Cheesesteak. You can find the best information about your visit to Philly on the Visit Philadelphia website.
