The backdrop
Eintracht Frankfurt are unbeaten in their last five competitive outings, having beaten Heidenheim (2-0), Hoffenheim (3-1), HJK Helsinki (6-0) and most recently Viktoria Köln (2-0) in the second round of the DFB Cup on Wednesday, following on from last weekend’s 3-3 draw with Borussia Dortmund.
UEFA Champions League participants Union Berlin are up next, and the club from Germany’s capital city are without a win in their last 11 games in all competitions, leaving them 15th in the Bundesliga table with six points. Urs Fischer’s side were knocked out of the DFB Cup on Tuesday evening following a 1-0 reverse at VfB Stuttgart.
Home advantage
Union’s current form should be taken with caution, however, as the respective home side has won each of the last six meetings between these clubs. The Eagles lost on their two most recent visits to the Stadion an der Alten Försterei by a 2-0 scoreline; they triumphed twice at Deutsche Bank Park in 2022/23, winning 2-0 both in the Bundesliga and the DFB Cup.
Aerial strength
Union have scored eight of their 11 league goals this term via headers, including three from corners. The target man at set pieces is leading scorer and newly capped Germany international Kevin Behrens, who has found the net four times. They will come up against a robust Eintracht backline, though, as the Eagles have only conceded one headed goal this season and not at all from corners – putting the team top league-wide in both defensive categories.
Marmoush hitting his stride
Omar Marmoush registered his first Bundesliga brace in what was his 71st league appearance in Eintracht’s draw with Dortmund last weekend. Having also found the target in the 3-1 win over Hoffenheim, it’s the first time Marmoush has scored in back-to-back Bundesliga matches. He had 10 attempts at goal across the two games, a figure bettered only by Bayern Munich forward Harry Kane (11). The Egyptian striker was given a breather on the bench for the first hour in the cup during the week, so his fresh legs could be a decisive factor in Berlin on Saturday.
