Board member for sport Markus Krösche: “We were far too naïve in the first half and conceded goals too easily. The gaps were too big, we defended badly. I can’t accuse the boys of not wanting it, but maybe they wanted it too much in certain situations. It’s fine that we really wanted to get a goal, but we still need to keep our shape and not lose control. There are a few tactical rules which the team need to stick to. If you don’t, then you’re going to be brutally punished by a team like Bayern Munich.”
Head coach Oliver Glasner: “It’s a deserved win for FC Bayern. We lost our heads after the second goal. We were permanently trying to put Manuel Neuer under pressure, and then Bayern ruthlessly exploited the spaces and we were overrun, had no grip on the game and couldn’t handle their one-touch football. The first five goals all originated out wide when Bayern created an overload. That’s something I spoke about after Magdeburg. On Wednesday we’ve got the opportunity to do better against similarly strong opponents.”
Sebastian Rode: “We fell behind through two set pieces, which is disappointing. If Jesper had taken his chance to make it 2-1, that could’ve given us a lift. Up until half-time, we had no answers for how to defend against Bayern. Their flexibility and pace, with a lot of players who can sprint over 34 or 35 kilometres an hour, were immense. They had far too much room, but you have to acknowledge their quality. The coach found the right words at the break. Our aim was to not lose the second half. Now we need to process this defeat well tomorrow and file it away. We’ll show a different side on Wednesday in Helsinki.”
