Timothy Chandler signs contract extension
Timothy Chandler will continue to don the Eintracht jersey beyond the end of the current season after signing a new contract through to 30 June 2022. The full-back joined the Eintracht academy in 2001 but found it tough to break into the senior squad. After a four-year stint at 1. FC Nürnberg between 2010 and 2014, the Frankfurt native returned home and carved out a niche with his boyhood club. Chandler’s second spell with the Eagles has seen its ups and downs, from the relegation play-off against his former club in 2016 to the DFB Cup victory in 2018, and has also been dogged by constant injury problems. Last season for example, the 29-year-old had to wait until 5 May for his first and only appearance when he came on for the final quarter of an hour at Bayer Leverkusen.
The USA international, who has been capped 29 times by his father’s homeland, has remained injury-free since then and made two appearances in UEFA Europa League qualification as well as a cameo in the 2-1 defeat at Leipzig, where he set up Eintracht’s goal shortly after coming on.
In total, Chandler has made 110 first-team appearances for his boyhood club, and his affiliation to the Eagles is also reflected in his role as captain of the Junior Eagles Kids Club. Though a right-back by trade, he has increasingly been used on the left flank in recent times.
“With his dynamic and variable playing style, 'Timmy' doesn't just play a key part on the pitch, but is also very important around the club as an opinion leader and role model,” said sporting director Bruno Hübner. “We’re pleased he’s overcome his injury problems and wish him continued good health and success over the coming years.”
