Mascarell’s successor
Lucas Torro didn’t really need to join a club team. The Spaniard could quite easily have played with his family of seven brothers and nine nieces and nephews, but then he wouldn’t have been able to look forward to the “big challenge of the Bundesliga” that has brought the 23-year-old to the Main. Torro has had a good education at Real Madrid, where he also trained and played with Omar Mascarell in the reserve team.
Now he could be Mascarell’s successor in the holding midfield role in the Eintracht side. When asked which of the two was better in that position at the time, he grins: “We were equally good.” He then laughs as we tell him that all Eintracht fans could happily live with that. Torro has felt at ease since the day he arrived in Frankfurt and is unfazed by the more physical, faster and more intensive style of football in Germany: “That’s not a problem for me.” As for his personal ambition for his first season with the Eagles, he’s matter-of-fact: “I want to help the team and play as many games as possible.”
The Spaniard, who grew up in Alicante, spent last season on loan from Real Madrid at Spanish second-tier side Osasuna. His contract at Eintracht runs until June 2023, giving him plenty of time to fully establish himself in Frankfurt, where his first impressions of his new home have been positive: “Skyscrapers, respectful people and great food,” he summarises.
He is keen to meet a Spanish club in the UEFA Europa League, but is looking forward to playing in Europe regardless: “This competition is our biggest challenge.”
