Well-travelled Wiedwald back for a second spell

Goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald returned for a second stint at Eintracht Frankfurt in summer 2018, putting pen to paper on a three-year contract at the Commerzbank Arena.

The experienced custodian represented the Eagles between 2013 and 2015, although never quite managed to hold down the No1 spot. Even so, 11 Bundesliga outings – as well as one UEFA Europa League and one DFB Cup appearance – were respectable enough returns in that period, as he admits: "It was still a good time for me. I improved and ultimately I played more."

After his departure from Frankfurt, Wiedwald pitched up first at Werder Bremen, where he made 65 appearances between 2015 and 2017, and then at English second-tier side Leeds United, where he kept 12 clean sheets in 28 Championship games in 2017/18.

Reflecting on his spell in Yorkshire, Wiedwald said: "I really grew as a person through my experience abroad. Now I need to make myself an option in Frankfurt and – in an ideal world – play as often as possible."

Pre-season was tougher under new Eagles coach Adi Hütter and goalkeeping coach Moppes Petz than it had been in England, not that Wiedwald minds, aware as he is that it will be "tough to top last season". Even so, he remains optimistic, particularly with Hütter in charge: "He knows exactly what he wants to transmit to us and is capable of making himself understood."
