Oliver Glasner to depart at end of season

Eintracht Frankfurt and Oliver Glasner will part company at the end of the current season, a year before the coach’s contract was due to expire on 30 June 2024.

Following lengthy and intensive discussions as well as a comprehensive analysis with head coach Oliver Glasner, Eintracht Frankfurt have reached the decision to end their working relationship with the tactician at the end of the 2022/23 season. The team’s sporting development and overall performance in the second half of the campaign prompted club officials to reevaluate the situation, a process which led to the aforementioned decision. The 48-year-old’s contract was originally due to expire on 30 June 2024.

European qualification still possible

Glasner joined the Eagles from VfL Wolfsburg ahead of the start of the 2021/22 season and led the club to UEFA Europa League glory in his debut campaign – Eintracht’s first European success in 42 years – as well as an 11th-placed finish in the Bundesliga.

The Austrian also steered the team to the round of 16 in the club’s maiden participation in the UEFA Champions League, where they were ultimately eliminated by recently crowned Italian champions SSC Napoli. In the Bundesliga, Eintracht were unable to build on their achievements in the first half of the campaign, earning 12 points from their first 14 games in the second half of the season. In the remaining three matches and the DFB Cup final, Glasner and his team still have the chance to qualify for European competition next term.

We want to work together on the best possible farewell and concentrate all our energy on our remaining games.

Board member for sport Markus Krösche: “We are of the opinion that after all the speculation and turmoil that has arisen in recent weeks and months with regard to the coaching personnel, that clarity is now essential moving forward so that the coach and the team can completely focus on achieving the objectives for the season and the cup final. With that in mind, we want to work together on the best possible farewell and concentrate all our energy on our remaining games.”

I accept the decision made by the club management, which was explained to me in a clear manner.

Head coach Oliver Glasner

Head coach Oliver Glasner: “I accept the decision made by the club management, which was explained to me in a clear manner. The talks with Markus Krösche and Timmo Hardung were honest, open and fair, just as our communication in the last few years has always been constructive and guided by a great deal of mutual respect. But now is not the time to say goodbye or to look back: we still have a decisive mission ahead of us and will do everything we can in the coming weeks to make sure our performances in the final straight of the Bundesliga season lay the foundation for a fantastic final together in Berlin and to bring the DFB Cup back to Frankfurt. It’s very important to me personally that Eintracht can enjoy great nights on the European stage again in the coming season.”
