Skibbe: Fear Does Not Get You Far

Ahead of the last home game of the year (against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday at 15.30h CET) Eintracht manager Michael Skibbe offered his views during today’s press conference.

One of the major issues discussed today was the bad luck with injuries in the back four. In recent weeks various key players in defense had suffered from injuries, some even needed surgery. The match against Dortmund will also be a trip down memory lane for Michael Skibbe who had a 10 year spell at Borussia mainly managing youth teams but also the first team for 18 months.

Mr Skibbe, what is the latest regarding Giorgos Tzavellas?
He was in Greece for two days to get medical treatment. He currently is on his way back to Frankfurt, he feels good and is keen on returning to practice sessions. But we want to take no risks, he needs further examination. After that we’ll know whether he can return to training.

In case he will be back, would he be an alternative for central defense? With Franz, Russ and Chris three contenders for these positions are already out.
Yes, Giorgos would be an alternative. But we will have to wait and see whether he’ll be in training. And we have a couple of other players for that position: Kevin Kraus and Ricardo Clark.

So you especially observed those two in training?
Exactly, both convinced me in the sessions although Kevin could not train today. He was at trade school, as was Sonny Kittel. Kevin will return to training tomorrow.

What are the advantages of each Clark and Kraus?
Ricardo has a good technique and fierceness. He is also a little more agile compared to Kraus who is much larger. That could be an advantage against the swift and versatile Dortmund players. A bonus for Kevin is his height, plus his strength in aerial duels - we all know about Dortmund being a threat from set pieces.

Do you think there will be changes in Dortmund’s line up and tactics?
No, I do not think so. Dortmund hardly alter their formation. The back four and defensive midfield never change, and in their attack they choose four out of five players.

You would not consider changing your tactics, maybe to three in defense or likewise?
No, we do not train that, and we never play that way, it is not our aim. It would not make sense.

Will the game be a special one for you?
Yes of course, it always is and now even more so with the current situation. With Borussia we will host the top Bundesliga team who are miles ahead, it is the last league game of the year in front of a sell out home crowd – we want to show a good performance.

Do you fear Dortmunds qualities up front?
Fear does not get you far in sports. Dortmund are really strong. It will be a tough and interesting challenge which we are looking forward to. We will try everything to be successful in the last home game of the year, with the support of our fans.
