Loanees back home

Ahead of the new season, six familiar faces have returned to Frankfurt following loan spells. Here is a round-up of how they fared.

Goncalo Paciencia and Frederik Rönnow did not have the best of times at Schalke 04. The legendary Gelsenkirchen club finished bottom and were relegated to Bundesliga 2, while both Paciencia and Rönnow were hampered by injury problems. After just eight games, Paciencia suffered a knee injury and was out of action for a number of months. It was a similar story for Rönnow, who made 11 league appearances for the Royal Blues either side of a groin injury.

Premature end for Stendera

It was a frustrating year for Nils Stendera at 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig in the North-East Regional League. Because of the pandemic, the season was suspended after Matchday 12 at the end of October.

Zalazar unfurls his talent

Things went very differently for Rodrigo Zalazar at FC St. Pauli. The midfielder featured in all 35 competitive matches for the Hamburg side, starting 32 times. The 21-year-old also played a big part in their revival in the second half of the campaign, registering six goals and six assists.

Da Costa key figure in great escape

When Danny da Costa joined Mainz on loan in January, the club had just seven points on the board and survival looked nigh-on impossible. They finished the season with 39 points – thanks in no small part to Da Costa’s energetic style of play. The right-back featured in 16 out of 17 games, starting 15 of those.

Prolific season for Joveljic

Dejan Joveljic joined Austrian Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburger AC at the start of last season. The striker went on to feature in every one of their 46 matches in all competitions, scoring an impressive 20 goals as well as contributing five assists.
