“Our full focus is on Union”

Ahead of Eintracht’s visit to Union Berlin, Oliver Glasner discusses the Eagles’ preparations, tactics and personnel quandaries.

Oliver Glasner on...

…the last few days and preparations for Berlin: “Travelling home from a European game after being knocked out was an unfamiliar feeling for us, but we’re all managing to put the defeat in perspective. We’re obviously disappointed, but very proud too. We’ve had another quick chat with the players about our European journey as a whole – the lads are in good spirits. Every player made a very positive impression in training on Friday. Our full focus is on Union Berlin.”

…personnel: “After a bit of regeneration, the focus is fully on Union. Apart from Junior Dina Ebimbe, Jesper Lindström and the suspended Sebastian Rode everyone's available."

… Union Berlin: “Union have also had an outstanding campaign in Europe. They have a great deal of pace in attack and are very dangerous from set pieces. It’s going to be important for us to give our all again and pick up another three points before the international break. We’re aware of their good home record and style of play. We showed in our last game against them that we have the know-how and quality to cause Union problems.”

We want to play with more fluency than we have of late and play our football on the pitch.

Head coach Oliver Glasner

...the current standings: “It’s about concentrating in defence, being focused at set plays and alert to second balls. If we manage that, we’re much more likely to be successful than if we spend day and night looking at the table.”

…Eintracht’s system: “The back four is an option that we’re keeping in mind. We’ve used it regularly this season – that way we have an extra attacker and are able to apply more pressure against the ball, attack higher up the pitch and spend less time in our own half. In general, we try to play our style. It’s something we don’t want to change, but refine. We want to play with more fluency than we have of late and play our football on the pitch.”

…Randal Kolo Muani: “As a coach, you need your best players. Kolo is an outstanding player and we need his qualities. He’s in the spotlight at the moment – all eyes are on him – but we also need a functioning team around him, with excellent cover in every position. Whether it’s Daichi, Mario, Aurélio or Rafael – they all have their own qualities.”
