Opportunity knocks

Victory over Union Berlin would not only consolidate Eintracht’s place in fourth, but also increase the distance from one of the teams chasing them.

Following the 1-1 draw at Leipzig at the weekend, Eintracht go head-to-head with another side in contention for European qualification in Union Berlin. Die Eisernen are in good form at present and are on a four-game unbeaten run, collecting eight points in the process.

An ambitious outfit, the capital city club are just two points off sixth place in the Bundesliga standings, giving them – like Eintracht – the chance to achieve some big objectives with nine games of the season still to play. As such, decisive points are at stake as the teams go head-to-head on Saturday, with Eintracht eager to go into the international break on a high note.

The Eagles have had the upper hand in this fixture historically, winning five, drawing four and losing just one, although each side has won once in the three Bundesliga meetings contested to date.

Attacking might meets defensive solidity

Matches between these teams have produced plenty of goals, with 3.5 scored per game on average, a rate aided by the 3-3 draw in the first half of the season. However, only 20 goals have been registered in Union’s games in 2021, 11 for and nine against. That stands in stark contrast to Eintracht, who have scored 27 and conceded 12 over the same period.

Eintracht midfielder Sebastian Rode said: “Now we have to stay focused. We’ve got a very important game coming up on Saturday against Union. We want to pick up three more points before the international break to cement our place in the table.”

Martin Hinteregger remains doubtful for the game due to a muscle strain. Erik Durm and Almamy Toure will definitely miss out through injury, along with Tuta and Amin Younes who are suspended due to yellow card accumulation.
