“Unity makes us strong”

Fredi Bobic discusses the highs and lows of the season, the transfer market and the shorter winter break.

Fredi, when was the last time you can remember such an evenly balanced season?
“That was certainly some time ago. It’s definitely to do with the effects of the pandemic. At Bayern Munich, for example, in the last few games of the year you could tell that their players didn’t have a summer break at all. Their batteries were just empty.”

What’s your verdict of Eintracht’s campaign so far, with 17 points from 13 Bundesliga outings?
“I’m satisfied. We've had ups and downs, and of course we're annoyed by one or two of the points we've dropped. And we could be a few places higher up in the standings. But this season can't be measured by normal standards. And I can say with conviction that the coaching staff and the squad are doing a good job.”

Who has surprised you positively this season?
“I don’t want to single one player out because it’s unity that makes us strong.”

What will Eintracht’s activities in the transfer window look like?
“As always, we’re watching the market with a great sense of calm. It’s primarily a matter of finances. I don't necessarily see that we have any real need. If anything, it would be to give one or two of the fringe players the chance to find any opportunity elsewhere.”

You used to play in England. What’s it like having no winter break?
“I think the importance of a winter break is overstated. Athletes in other sports, be it in handball, ice hockey or – as you mentioned – the English Premier League, play through the winter without a break. You can catch your breath a bit over the actual Christmas holidays. If you have enough of a summer break in a normal season then it’s ok.”

What was the best Eintracht moment of the year for you?
“There’s no one moment. My special memory from 2020 is the solidarity and fairness with which the league and the clubs tackled some difficult months. That’s not something to be taken for granted.”
