Glasner’s return to Wolfsburg

Eintracht are aiming to pick up their first Bundesliga win of the season when they travel to Wolfsburg on Sunday.

Exactly 120 days have passed since Oliver Glasner last stood on the touchline at the Volkswagen Arena in Wolfsburg, and on Sunday the Eintracht head coach will return to face his former employers as the Eagles bid to pick up their first league victory on Matchday 5 of 2021/22.

Solid at the back

That will be easier said than done, however, as the Wolves have been in impressive form so far. Wolfsburg have earned maximum points under new coach Mark van Bommel, setting a new club record in the process. That is largely thanks to a robust rearguard: Sunday’s opponents have already kept a league high three clean sheets (joint best alongside Mainz).

Van Bommel is nevertheless taking nothing for granted, despite his side holding a nine-point advantage over Eintracht: “In my view they play good football, which you could see in the Europa League. Frankfurt have qualities that not a lot of teams have. The results are the only thing they’ve been missing so far. People are quick to say they haven’t started the season well, but I don’t see it like that.”

Dodi Lukebakio has made the switch to VfL Wolfsburg on a season-long loan deal.

Glasner familiar with former charges

While history may be on Wolfsburg’s side ahead of the 45th meeting between the teams, Glasner is determined to earn a first win of the campaign against his former side. “In Wolfsburg we’ll need to be clinical in front of goal because they won’t give us many chances,” said the tactician at his pre-match press conference. “My coaching team and I know VfL very well, and we’re well prepared.”
