Abraham to leave Eintracht in January

Club captain moving back to Argentina after almost 15 years in Europe.

This coming January, six months before his contract is due to expire, David Abraham will return home to Argentina to be with his family and son Alfonso. This move will also mark the end of the 34-year-old’s professional career.

The Eagles captain explained that while it was not an easy decision, his family is the reason for his departure: “I left the village where I was born as a young man. I’ve now been a father for four and a half years and especially since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, I’ve seen very little of my son. You can’t get back that time seeing your child grow up.”

Obviously the coach and other people have tried to persuade me to stay longer, but I can’t wait to see my family.

He is set to play his last competitive game for the club at home to FC Schalke 04 on Matchday 16 in mid-January. “Obviously the coach and other people have tried to persuade me to stay longer, but I can’t wait to see my family,” said the Argentinian.

Abraham left his home town of Chabas in 2003 to join CA Independiente on the outskirts of Buenos Aires. He first came to Europe in 2007 with a loan move to Tarragona in Spain. Following four years with FC Basel, he arrived in the Bundesliga at TSG Hoffenheim before signing for Eintracht in 2015. He is now in his sixth season with the Eagles – the longest spell he has had at any club.

The affable centre-back has made 170 competitive appearances for Eintracht to date, the majority of them as captain since October 2016, with the highlight of his time at Eintracht being the DFB Cup success in 2018.
