Head coach Oliver Glasner was forced into two late changes to his line-up. Randal Kolo Muani missed out with an adductor problem and was replaced up front by Rafael Borré, while Djibril Sow had to withdraw during the warm-up due to illness and dropped to the bench, with Ansgar Knauff – who was originally replaced by Daichi Kamada – taking his place.
Own goal breaks the deadlock
Eintracht had the majority of the play in the first half but failed to create any clear chances during a quiet opening period. They needed a bit of luck to break the deadlock and it arrived in the 25th minute, when Aurelio Buta showed pace and skill to get into the penalty area and squared the ball low into the middle. Augsburg midfielder Elvis Rexhbecaj slid in to clear but instead he diverted it past wrongfooted goalkeeper Tomas Koubek.
The Eagles remained on top and Knauff, making his 50th competitive appearance for SGE, came close to making it 2-0 with a shot from the edge of the box. The visitors, having offered little going forward, came to life a bit towards the end of the first half and Tuta made a crucial intervention to block Dion Beljo’s effort over the bar on the stroke of half-time.
Eagles pegged back
Augsburg coach Enrico Maaßen made a double substitution at the break and his team came out with more purpose after the restart, Ermedin Demirovic forcing a save from Kevin Trapp on 48 minutes. Less than 60 seconds later, Eintracht had the ball in the net but Borré began his run in an offside position. Ten minutes later, FCA levelled when Ruben Vargas crossed the ball into Demirovic, who this time found the far corner of the net with a skilful volley on the turn.
It was an even contest after that with both sides looking for a winner, but genuine opportunities remained hard to come by. Junior Dina Ebimbe had Eintracht’s best chance when he fired over from Borré’s pass, while there was also a welcome return to action for Jesper Lindström, who made his comeback from injury in the closing stages. His introduction couldn’t produce a goal, though, as it ended 1-1 for the fourth consecutive Bundesliga game at Deutsche Bank Park.
